Week 4 CFL Picks: Betting On The Only Road Underdog

Week 3 saw our CFL betting picks go 1-1 for the second straight week, making us 3-2 for +0.8 units so far in the 2017 CFL betting season.

The winner came with ease as the Calgary Stampeders finally showed flashes of the team that toyed with the CFL last year (until the Grey Cup, at least). The Stamps whipped the host Blue Bombers 29-10 in Winnipeg to easily cover the 3-point spread and improve to 22-6-1 against the spread the last 29 times they’ve been favoured by 3 points or less.

The losing pick didn’t have much dramatics, either. We liked the Tiger-Cats to get off the schneid and beat a Roughriders squad that always plays teams tough but has difficulty pulling out victories, but Saskatchewan shredded the Hamilton defence for 31 first downs and nearly 500 yards of offence in a 37-20 rout.

Let’s see what Week 4 has in store.

Week 4 CFL Betting Lines

The Argonauts are the most pleasant surprise so far of the 2017 CFL season, but they still aren’t getting that much respect.

In fact, they’re the only road team not to be favoured to win this week. Toronto (2-1) is a 3.5-point underdog at Winnipeg for the Thursday nighter that will kick off the Week 4 CFL betting schedule.

Elsewhere, after easily covering as field-goal favourites last week in Winnipeg, the Stampeders are just 4.5-point chalk at Montreal to open the Friday night doubleheader. The Alouettes are home dogs for the second straight week, after losing 23-16 to B.C. as 3-point dogs last Thursday.

In Friday’s nightcap, the struggling Redblacks are just a 4-point underdog as they visit Edmonton, where the Eskimos are coming off a bye week.

Week 3 of the CFL ends Saturday night with a battle of felines between the Lions and Tiger-Cats. B.C. is a 3-point favourite to keep the Ticats winless on the year.

Week 4 CFL Betting Picks

1. Argonauts at Blue Bombers Betting Pick

We said last week that we still aren’t believers in the Blue Bombers, and their performance against Calgary did nothing to change our minds. Without the benefit of winning the turnover battle (Winnipeg committed 3 turnovers while Calgary committed 2), the Blue Bombers didn’t really have a chance, especially in the second half as Calgary outscored the hosts 20-0.

Marc Trestman and Jim Popp are making an impact in Toronto much faster than we expected. Trestman is deflecting all the praise for the Argos’ early success to QB Ricky Ray, but the bottom line is that the Argos currently lead the CFL in passing yards and are second in the league in total yards on offence. The defence has also been stellar, ranking in the top 3 in yards, rushing yards and points against.

The bottom line is that Toronto’s 2-1 record is no fluke, while Winnipeg’s record last year was. You can also question how valuable home field is in this matchup (Winnipeg is 11-26 all-time at home at Investors Group Field), and we love getting this line at over a field goal.
