NHL Predictions For Tonight

Winnipeg Jets at Detroit Red Wings

It’s bounce-back time for the Red Wings after they were humiliated 10-1 by the Canadiens Saturday night on national television. Detroit’s a proud franchise with a long winning tradition, and we expect the Wings to bring a huge effort tonight on home ice.

If Detroit’s going to threaten to pull off the upset of the red-hot Jets, the Wings will probably need to score some goals to do it. That’s because Winnipeg is consistently filling the net right now, producing at least 4 goals in 5 of its last 9 games. Even if Detroit tries to play better defence, we’re not sure they can hold the Jets under 3, something they’ve failed to do to opponents in 6 of their last 7.

Winnipeg isn’t invincible on the road, however, losing 4 of its last 6 games away from home. We see great potential for both teams to score at least 3 goals here tonight, so the Over 5.5 is very appealing at these short odds.

NHL betting prediction: Over 5.5 -105

New York Islanders at Tampa Bay Lightning

A few weeks ago, New York went into Tampa and beat the Lightning 5-3, sending Tampa into a brief tailspin. Tonight, the Bolts should be eager to avenge that loss, a game in which they trailed the Isles 4-0 before making a game of it.

New York has won 8 of its last 10 games, but they’ve needed a lot of offence to do it. The Isles have scored 5 goals or more in 6 of their last 10, masking a leaky defence that has allowed at least 4 goals in 4 of their last 7. Now, playing for the second straight night following a 5-4 shootout win in Florida, they’ll be hard-pressed to slow a motivated Tampa attack.

The Lightning had been in a scoring slump, potting just 9 regulation time goals in a 5-game stretch, but they broke out Saturday with a 5-2 home win over a stingy Sharks team. Nikita Kucherov scored twice in that game and the Lightning scored 4 third-period goals, and we expect them to carry that confidence and momentum into tonight’s contest. With the strong possibility that the Islanders get a couple of goals themselves, Tampa might need 4 goals to get the victory tonight. Betting on their Team Total Over allows us to get the Bolts at plus money at home against a tired opponent.
