The Super Bowl will be the steak dinner Sunday night, but NHL betting offers us four afternoon appetizers to get us started.

Here’s a quick look at the four games on tap Sunday in NHL betting:

Coyotes at Canadiens (1 p.m. eastern)

This game will be broadcast across Canada, and it looks like we all might have to watch a blowout. Arizona was spanked 7-2 in Ottawa Saturday night and is realistically out of playoff contention already, while the Habs are coming off a 1-0 overtime win over Washington and have won five in a row. Montreal is 15-3-1 in its last 19 games.

If you want to bet on Montreal but don’t like laying the heavy juice, you might want to try the Canadiens on the -1.5 puck line. 18 of Montreal’s 32 wins have come by two goals or more. Or, you could parlay Montreal on the moneyline with one of your Super Bowl bets for a bigger payoff.

Blues at Capitals (1 p.m.)

This looks like two teams going in opposite directions as the Blues are 9-0-1 in their last 10 while the Caps have one win in their last six games. However, Washington is 8-1 in its last 9 home games and St. Louis is 1-4 in its last five visits to the Capitals.

We suggest looking at the regulation tie in this one, which should pay in the 3:1 range. The Blues’ last two wins have come in a shootout, and Washington lost in OT on Saturday.

Predators at Penguins (2 p.m.)

The Preds have lost their last five against Pittsburgh. The Penguins aren’t exactly flying high these days, however, going 2-5 in their last 7 and needing a late rally to edge New Jersey 2-1 Friday night.

The Under 5.5 appears like a solid play here. Both teams are playing their fourth game in six nights.

Wild at Canucks (3 p.m.)

Minnesota at Vancouver is the second national broadcast of the afternoon. The Canucks aren’t favoured by nearly as much as we thought they would be, which suggests the oddsmakers see something in Minnesota that they like.

We’re not really sure what that is, especially since the Wild is playing its fourth straight road game on a west coast trip. It’s also worth noting that the home team has won 17 of the last 23 games between these teams, and that the Wild is 2-11 in its last 13 trips to Vancouver.

We lean to the Canucks in this contest.
