Thank God for the Canadian Open.
It’d be a slow weekend for sports to bet on in Canada if it weren’t for our national open golf championship, which has actually drawn several big names on the PGA Tour this week in Oakville, Ontario.
Here’s our Top 3 list of sports to bet on this weekend in Canada.
1. Canadian Open Golf
Dustin Johnson and Jason Day, two of the top four players in the World Golf Rankings, headline the field at Glen Abbey Golf Club.
Both players were near the top of the leaderboard after opening-round action Thursday, though DJ played the first 3 holes of Round 2 at 3-over-par.
Other recognizable names in early contention included Matt Kuchar, former Canadian Open champion Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and even Ernie Els.
2. Blue Jays Baseball
The Jays host Seattle for a 3-game series this weekend at Rogers Centre, with a Friday night game followed by afternoon contests Saturday and Sunday.
Toronto’s offence is clicking out of the all-star break, scoring 31 runs in five games. The Jays have also won 38 of their last 56 home games against the Mariners.
The Jays’ pitchers in this series will be Marco Estrada, R.A. Dickey and J.A. Happ, while Seattle is countering with James Paxton, Hisashi Iwakuma and a yet-to-be-named starter for Sunday.
A series win this weekend could vault the Jays into first place in the AL East. Toronto is a -210 favourite at www.Bodog.eu to win at least 2 of 3 versus the Mariners.
3. CFL Football
As we eagerly await the start of the 2016 NFL season, the Canadian game is filling the void quite nicely.
Week 5 of the CFL campaign began Thursday with Calgary defeating Winnipeg. There are also games Friday (Ottawa at Saskatchewan), Saturday (Hamilton at Edmonton) and Monday (Montreal at Toronto).
TSN covers all the games and does a nice job at it.
We’re also enjoying the season because we’re 5-2 against the spread on our first 7 bets. We won on the Calgary/Winnipeg Over 50 on Thursday, and we’ve got the Eskimos -4 for Saturday night.
