CFL Betting Picks For Week 10

We suffered through our worst week of the season for our free CFL betting picks last week, going 0-2 for -2.25 units.

We’re still 9-6 (60%) for +2.35 units on the year, but it stung to give away half our profit on the season in one week.

Our first loss came on a 2-team, 6.5-point teaser of the Redblacks -2.5 and Argonauts +9. Neither team looked good at all as Ottawa was shocked at home 43-19 by the Alouettes (leading to the benching of Henry Burris) and the Argos were blown out by the visiting Eskimos.

The other loss was on the Lions -2.5 versus the Stampeders. Calgary made a major statement by going into BC and routing their hosts 37-9.

Week 9 was a bizarre week in the CFL, a league that is known for its parity. All 4 games were blowouts, with the average margin of victory being 30.25 points.

Hopefully things get back to being a bit more predictable this week and we can get back on track with our Week 10 CFL betting picks.

Week 10 CFL Betting Picks

Lions at Redblacks (Thursday, 7:30 p.m. eastern)

The big news in this game is that Trevor Harris is taking over at QB for Ottawa, replacing Henry Burris.

The Redblacks offence is in desperate need of a boost, averaging around 20 points per game in its last 3 contests. And Harris has been very good in his 5 appearances, completing 106 of 129 passes for 1500 yards, 9 touchdowns and just 1 interception. Those numbers are even more impressive when you consider he made just 3 pass attempts in his most recent game, so Harris has basically accumulated those numbers in just 4 games.

He’ll be going up against a Lions squad that should be focused in the first game of a 2-game road trip. BC was embarrassed last week at home, but is 3-1 on the road this season and had been preparing for both Harris and Burris in practice this week.

Basically, Ottawa should be better this week, but so should the Lions. We see potential for a close game here, so we’ll tease the Lions +6.5 points to get them to +9, clearing the key numbers of 3 and 7.

Blue Bombers at Alouettes (Friday, 7 p.m. eastern)

Winnipeg is the flavour of the month in the CFL, going 3-0 since switching to Matt Nichols at QB. So it looks weird at first that oddsmakers opened the Alouettes as 2-point home favourites (they were quickly bet down to -1).

Couple of factors working against Winnipeg here, though. First, their momentum was interrupted by a bye week. Byes are nice when teams are struggling and can get things together, but they’re not ideal when you’re on a roll. Also, the Als have gained a lot of confidence in their past 2 games, nearly winning in Edmonton and then whipping the Redblacks last week.

The Bombers offence might not have been as good as we think recently, either. They’ve been outgained in all 3 of those wins under Nichols, relying heavily on turnovers. If Montreal can take care of the football, we like their chances of getting to 4-5 against an opponent that isn’t really as invincible as it may seem lately. We’ll take the Alouettes -1 at -110 at odds at Sports Interaction.

Roughriders at Eskimos (Friday, 10 p.m. eastern)

Saskatchewan is now 1-7 after being pounded 53-7 last week in Hamilton, while the Eskimos doubled up the Argos 46-23 in Toronto.

Now Edmonton is laying 13.5 points (they’re even -14 at BetOnline). The Eskimos haven’t been favoured by this much since July of 2005, when they edged the Blue Bombers 14-12 as 19.5 point favourites.

This line feels like an overreaction, considering the Eskimos are 4-4 and 3 of those wins would be by single digits were it not for a late interception return for a TD 2 weeks ago to beat the Alouettes by 11.

It’s tough to back Saskatchewan right now, though. So we’re going to plug our noses here and just ask the Roughriders to keep things respectable. We’ll tease Saskatchewan up to +20 and combine it with Lions +9.

For the second straight week, we’re going with a point spread pick and a 2-team, 6.5-point teaser.

The point spread pick is on the Alouettes -1 against Winnipeg on Friday.
