NHL Betting Picks For Tonight

1. Blue Jackets First Period Moneyline -115 (BetOnline)

Columbus looks to bounce back tonight after a 5-1 loss at home to New Jersey on Saturday, and we like their chances of coming out flying early tonight. The Jackets have been a great first period team all year, especially as a favourite. Meanwhile, the Wings have won 2 straight but that’s a bit deceiving, considering they were outshot nearly 2-1 in those 2 games by the Predators and Islanders. Detroit’s struggled at home this year (6-17 last 23) and a big part of that has been getting off to slow starts, as they’ve been outscored by approximately 0.3 goals per game in first periods at home this season.

2. Hurricanes/Capitals Over 5 -140

Lost in the Capitals’ recent dominance has been a bit of slippage in their defensive play. Although they blanked the Kings on Sunday afternoon, the Caps were outshot 38-20 in that contest. Prior to that, Washington had allowed 3 goals or more in 3 of 5 games and 6 of 9, and they’d allowed 2 goals or more in 8 of 9. Carolina’s offence isn’t nearly as good on the road but the Canes have averaged 4 goals per game over their last 3, and we think they can get a couple tonight. It’s almost a given that the Caps will get at least 2 tonight, considering they’ve scored 4 goals or more in 6 of their last 10. As long as each team gets to 2, we’ve got a push at worst – and there’s always the possibility Washington covers this total all by itself.

3. Wild/Jets Over 5.5 -112 (Pinnacle)

As we said yesterday with the Leafs/Islanders matchup, betting Over 5.5 is either asking both teams to score 3+ goals or requiring one of the teams to score at least 4. We’re always hesitant to bet Over 5.5 because of it, but all signs point to the potential of both teams filling the net tonight. Minnesota’s scored 5+ goals in 3 of its last 4 games while the Jets have given up 3 goals or more in an astounding 12 straight, including 5 against the impotent Avalanche on Saturday. Winnipeg has scored at least 2 goals in 20 straight games (which is equally astounding) and Minnesota has struggled a bit in its own end of late, giving up 3+ in 6 of 9. We won’t be surprised to see both teams get to 3 tonight.
