Proline Strategy: Best And Worst NHL Teams To Bet Against On The Puckline (Plus)

Betting on a team to win is just one approach to hockey betting.

Betting against a team (known as fading) can be another way to make some money betting hockey.

Yesterday in a post, we looked at the best and worst NHL favourites to take on the puckline (or plus, for Proline players, meaning they need to win by more than one goal for you to win your bet). Today, let’s take a look at the best and worst NHL teams to bet against by using the puckline (or plus).

Good teams to bet against on the puckline (or plus) are teams that routinely lose by more than one goal. Knowing this, you can lay 1.5 goals with the other team to increase your payout.

Bad teams to bet against on the puckline (or plus) are teams that often keep games close and lose by just one goal. Obviously, you don’t want to be laying 1.5 goals against teams that keep the game tight and maybe force overtime or a shootout, killing your bet.

All stats as of Tuesday, Dec. 21

Good

New York Rangers: When the Rangers lose, they generally lose big. In fact, only three of New York’s 15 losses this year came by a single goal.

New Jersey Devils: The Devils don’t just lose a lot this year, they get blown out. In New Jersey’s 24 losses this year, 18 of them have been by two goals or more.

Toronto Maple Leafs: This is probably no surprise to Leafs fans, but Toronto doesn’t lose a lot of close games. Only six of the Buds’ 21 defeats were by one-goal margins.

Los Angeles Kings: The Kings don’t lose often, dropping 13 games so far. But when they do, they often lose by two or more. L.A. has only lost four one-goal contests.

Bad

Philadelphia Flyers: It’s pretty hard to blow out the Flyers this year. Philly has lost 13 games, only four of them by more than one goal.

New York Islanders: The Islanders may be bad, but they are still competitive. 24 losses this season, 13 of them by one goal.

Nashville Predators: Nashville is also in almost every game. Of the Preds’ 15 losses, just six were by multi-goal differentials.
