Robert Griffin Might Not Start Redskins Season Opener

Robert GriffinIt still isn’t clear whether Robert Griffin III will be under center for the Redskins when Washington kicks off its NFL season Sept. 9 at home to the Eagles.

Griffin has yet to be cleared for game action after underdoing surgery on his right knee during the offseason, shortly after the speedy QB’s leg resembled a slinky during last year’s playoff loss to the Seahawks.

Dr. James Andrews inspected Griffin before the Redskins’ preseason game last night against Pittsburgh.

“(Andrews) will give us the yay or nay, but right now feels that his progress has been good,” Washington coach Mike Shanahan told reporters. “If there are no setbacks, he thinks he’ll be ready.”

Griffin has not practiced against anything but a scout-team defence so far this summer, but has not appeared to favour his knee while throwing.

Washington is a 4-point favourite over Philadelphia on the first Monday Night Football game of the season, down from an opening line of 5. The over/under is as high as 51 at some shops, no doubt in response to new Eagles coach Chip Kelly and the patented fast-pace offence he brings from Oregon.

If Griffin can’t start the season, Michigan State product Kirk Cousins will likely get the call at pivot. Cousins played four games for the Redskins last year, guiding Washington to an overtime win over Baltimore and a 38-21 rout of the Browns. He posted a 68.8 completion percentage and 101.6 passer rating in those four games, though he was 3 for 10 and had a passer rating of 40.0 in the playoff loss to Seattle.

Veteran Rex Grossman is the third QB on the Washington depth chart.
