Stampeders 7.5 Point Favourites Over Argos In Grey Cup

One year after losing the Canadian Football League championship game as 9-point favourites, the Calgary Stampeders are once again favoured by more than a touchdown to win the Grey Cup Sunday in Ottawa.

2017 Grey Cup Betting Odds

As of Friday afternoon, Sports Interaction was listing the Stampeders as 7.5-point favourites to beat the Toronto Argonauts in the 105th edition of the Grey Cup. Calgary was a whopping -320 favourite on the moneyline (risk $320 for every $100 you want to win) and Toronto paid +260 to pull off the outright upset.

However, the Over/Under is what seems to be catching most bettors’ eyes. According to Sports Interaction, more than 90% of early bets on the total were Over 53. Oddsmakers had adjusted that number to 53.5 as of Friday afternoon, and it shouldn’t be a surprise to see that number go up even more towards kickoff as public bettors love to bet on points being scored.

2017 Grey Cup Betting Prediction

The Stampeders were the class of the Canadian Football League once again this season, but they did it this year in a different way. While past Calgary outfits have simply overwhelmed the opposition with offence, the 2017 Stampeders won by stopping their opponents.

Calgary led the CFL this season in fewest yards allowed, fewest points allowed and, most significantly for this matchup, the fewest passing yards allowed. The reason the passing yards stat is important is because Toronto relied on the pass more than any other team in the CFL this year, gaining more than 75% of its yardage through the air. The Argos were second in the league in passing yards and just seventh running the football.

Despite the fact that Toronto was just 9-9 in the mediocre East Division, the Argos defence is nothing to be scoffed at, either. Toronto allowed the second-fewest yards in the league, owned the best defence against the run, ranked third against the pass and was fourth in points allowed.

Factor in what are expected to be some frigid conditions in Ottawa Sunday night (-2 Celsius, with a 20% chance of rain), and we don’t see either offence putting up a lot of points in this one.

We recommend betting the Under in this matchup (again, you might want to wait until closer to kickoff to get the best possible number on this wager), and think the Argos might also keep things within a touchdown in a low-scoring contest.
