2013-14 NHL Betting Preview: Pacific Division Appears Wide Open

There’s no shortage of talent in the Pacific Division. Here’s how it might play out.

Los Angeles Kings +155

The Kings still have the same core group of players that won the Stanley Cup two years ago and should be in the mix again. After a slow start, Jonathan Quick rebounded in the playoffs last year. He’s healthy now and should get out of the gate in a hurry. The Kings have a couple of young studs on the blue line and should win a ton of 2-1 and 3-1 games this season. Bet accordingly.

Vancouver Canucks +304

The Canucks will be a much different team now that John Tortorella is behind the bench. In short, the run-and-gun days in Vancouver are over. If Roberto Luongo keeps his head and plays up to his potential, he’ll keep under bettors happy as he makes a run for the No. 1 spot in Team Canada’s goal. The Canucks should benefit from Tortorella’s no-nonsense style.

San Jose Sharks +376

The Sharks have a ton of depth up front, experience on the blue line and Antti Niemi in the cage to shut the door. That’s a recipe for success in any league. Watch for Logan Couture to bust out in a big way and Brent Burns to be force playing on Joe Thornton’s wing. The Sharks will see a lot of chalk this year, but more often than not it should be worth it.

Edmonton Oilers +479

Can the young Oilers make the next step to get into the postseason? Well, that could depend on whether they can get through the first month or so without the services of centres Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Sam Gagner. Taylor Hall has moved to the middle for now, but will need secondary scoring support. Andrew Ference is a huge addition on the back end and Devan Dubnyk is ready to play a lot of games. This team won’t be as much of a great over bet as in previous seasons.

Anaheim Ducks +617

The Ducks might end up missing Bobby Ryan after sending him to Ottawa in the offseason. With Corey Perry and Ryan Getzlaf on the top line, Ryan was often overlooked. But Teemu Selanne has to slow down at some point and there isn’t much depth left at forward. Hard to know what to make of this team.

Phoenix Coyotes +1800

When you bring in Mike Ribeiro to fix the offence, there are going to be some question marks. Sure, Ribeiro is a quality playmaker, but he needs to be surrounded with skill to really make his impact felt a lot of nights. Pure snipers aren’t exactly growing on trees in Phoenix. If Mike Smith bounces back the Coyotes will be in the playoff hunt, but don’t be surprised if they end up on the outside looking in.

Calgary Flames +3100

Sometimes it has to get worse before it gets better. This is shaping up to be a truly terrible season for the Calgary Flames. They’re destined to have a very high pick in the entry draft.
