Why the Ravens will cover: Ton of points for the defending Super Bowl champion to be catching, even on the road and in the high altitude of Denver. QB Joe Flacco is 3-1 all-time against the Broncos, throwing for nearly 1,000 yards with six TDs and one interception. He hopes to exploit a Denver defence that will be without star linebacker Von Miller (suspension) and possibly without stud cornerback Champ Bailey (foot injury). Broncos are also without Pro Bowl linebacker Elvis Dumervil, who will suit up for Baltimore instead after signing with the Ravens as a free agent. The Ravens have covered their season opener each of the past five years and are 8-2-1 against the spread in their last 11 games against Denver.

Why the Broncos will cover: Denver is seeking revenge for last year’s crushing playoff loss at home to Baltimore, when the Ravens tied the game on a 70-yard touchdown pass with 31 seconds left, then won in OT. Ravens are a much different team this year, losing future Hall of Fame linebacker Ray Lewis (retirement) and safety Ed Reed (signed with Houston) as well as four other defensive starters. Baltimore also lost leading receiver Anquan Boldin to free agency (San Francisco). Denver improved its receiving corps with the signing of Wes Welker, who leads the NFL in receptions since the start of 2007. Mile High Stadium has long been one of the better home-field advantages in football, thanks to the altitude.

Our pick: Denver
