NHL Betting Previews for January 23, 2014

Ken Hitchcock is not a happy man after the Blues' last effort, a 7-1 loss in New Jersey.
Ken Hitchcock is not a happy man after the Blues’ last effort, a 7-1 loss in New Jersey.

We split our four picks yesterday but still turned a small profit as the Flames won as +120 home underdogs. There are ten games on the NHL hockey betting docket tonight, including the Senators, Maple Leafs, Canucks and Jets in action. Here are betting previews, offshore betting odds and Proline betting odds for all the action (Proline odds are from Ontario):

Hurricanes at Sabres
Offshore betting odds: Hurricanes -111, O/U 5
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.40/V 1.70/T 6.00/H 1.80/H+ 2.50, O/U 5

The Sabres look to avoid their fifth consecutive 4-3 loss when they host the Hurricanes. Carolina wouldn’t mind another one-goal game, since it is 15-3-9 in contests decided by a single marker. The Canes,  coming off a 3-2 win last night in Philadelphia, are 17-36 in their last 53 games playing on 0 days rest. But the Sabres are 15-37 in their last 52 overall.

Our pick: Under 5

Blues at Rangers
Offshore betting odds: Blues -117, O/U 5
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.20/V 1.60/T 6.00/H 1.90/H+ 2.70, O/U 5.5

St. Louis should be in a bad mood when it visits the Rangers. The Blues were embarrassed 7-1 in their last outing Tuesday in New Jersey, their fourth loss in six games. New York lost 5-3 to the Islanders Tuesday but is still 7-3 in its last 10 games. However, the Blues have won six of their last seven meetings with the Rangers and six of their last seven visits to MSG.

Our pick: Blues

Flyers at Blue Jackets
Offshore betting odds: Blue Jackets -141, O/U 5.5
Proline betting odds: V+ 3.00/V 2.20/T 6.50/H 1.45/H+ 1.90, O/U 5.5

The red-hot Columbus Blue Jackets (yes, that sounds weird) gun for a franchise-record eighth straight victory at home to Philly. Home ice has been important in recent matchups between these teams, with the host taking the last seven in the series. Philadelphia has lost five of its last seven games and sits just two points ahead of Columbus in the Metropolitan Division.

Our pick: Blue Jackets -1 on the puckline

Senators at Lightning
Offshore betting odds: Lightning -140, O/U 5.5
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.80/V 2.00/T 6.00/H 1.55/H+ 2.10

The Senators hope to hand the Lightning its sixth straight loss at home. Ottawa is 7-1-2 in its last 10 games and has also owned Tampa Bay for years, going 44-17-2 in the last 63 meetings. The home team, however, has won the last four games in the series.

Our pick: Senators +130

Penguins at Islanders
Offshore betting odds: Penguins -140, O/U 6
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.00/V 1.50/T 6.50/H 2.10/H+ 2.90, O/U 6

The Islanders have quietly won seven of their last nine games to move within five points of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. But they’ll have their hands full with the Penguins, who responded to Monday’s 5-1 loss to Florida by drubbing the Canadiens 5-1 Wednesday. Pittsburgh is 9-4 in its last 13 road games and is 36-16 in the last 52 meetings between the clubs. The Penguins’ 14 road victories this season are six more than the Islanders have won at home. The over is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.

Our pick: Over 6

Blackhawks at Wild
Offshore betting odds: Blackhawks -132, O/U 5
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.00/V 1.50/T 6.50/H 2.10/H+ 2.90, O/U 5.5

The Blackhawks uncharacteristically squandered a two-goal first-period lead last night in a loss to Detroit. Now they look to avenge a 4-3 loss to the Wild in the teams’ last meeting Dec. 3. Minnesota is coming off a 4-0 loss to Dallas on Tuesday, the second time Minny was blanked in its last four games. Still, the Wild is 7-3 in its last 10. The over has cashed in the last four meetings between the teams.

Our pick: Blackhawks

Maple Leafs at Stars
Offshore betting odds: Stars -131, O/U 6
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.60/V 1.85/T 6.00/H 1.65/H+ 2.30

Toronto seeks a seventh straight win when it visits the struggling Stars, who are 2-8-1 in January. Three of the last four meetings between these teams have gone to overtime, including a 3-2 Leafs’ win Dec. 5 in Toronto. The over is 22-8-3 in the Leafs’ last 33 games.

Our pick: Maple Leafs

Predators at Canucks
Offshore betting odds: Canucks -157, O/U 5
Proline betting odds: V+ 3.00/V 2.30/T 6.50/H 1.40/H+ 1.80, O/U 5.5

The Canucks seem to have rediscovered their game, winning two straight after a 1-7 skid. So too have the Predators, 3-1 in their last four after a 1-5 slump. The road team is 10-3 in the last 13 meetings between the teams, but the Preds are 17-35-1 in their last 53 against Vancouver and 15-36 in their last 51 on the road. The under is 24-7-5 in the Canucks’ last 36 home games.

Our pick: Under 5

Kings at Ducks
Offshore betting odds: Ducks -141, O/U 5
Proline betting odds: V+ 2.90/V 2.10/T 6.50/H 1.50/H+ 2.00, O/U 5.5

Anaheim looks to bounce back from a rare home loss, suffering its first regulation defeat at Honda Centre Tuesday against the Jets. Ducks players admitted to looking forward to this weekend’s outdoor game, but they’ll be playing the Kings in that contest as well so it might be a distraction for both teams. LA is struggling, 4-10 in its last 14 and 1-8 in its last 9 on the road. The Kings have won six of the last eight games between the teams.

Our pick: Under 5

Jets at Sharks
Offshore betting odds: Sharks -205, O/U 5.5
Proline betting odds: V+ 3.50/V 2.70/T 7.00/H 1.30/H+ 1.60, O/U 5.5

The Jets hope to win their fifth straight game under new coach Paul Maurice as they invade the Shark Tank. Winnipeg cashed as +210 underdogs in its last outing at Anaheim, so it’s clear the Jets aren’t intimidated by a challenge. That’s good, because the Jets are 3-10-2 in their last 15 against the Sharks and 1-5-1 in their last 7 at San Jose. The Sharks have won four in a row.

Our pick: Jets
